Mind.Art.Recovery.KY

Mind.Art.Recovery.KY (MARK) is an expressive arts curriculum that gives individuals and families in recovery opportunities for creative self-expression via journal making, creative writing, painting, etc. MARK provides a creative outlet to process traumatic community and family experiences related to SUD.

From 2021-2022, MARK was piloted in six (6) counties, with 98 participants in various settings. This included an at-risk youth after-school and summer camp facility, a residential rehabilitation program, a women’s residential treatment facility and transitional home, and community court-ordered rehabilitation programs.

Program Outcomes

Evaluation data from individual lessons showed:

  • 62% increase in self-reported art skills.
  • 39% improvement in participants’ emotional state (e.g., sense of calmness, happiness, ability to focus, sense of belonging and confidence) after each class.
  • 34% improvement in participants’ comfort expressing themselves.
